The Old Mill – Mrežnica

The Old Mill project represents the reconstruction and adaptive reuse of an old mill into an intimate boutique hotel, situated right on the riverbank. The fundamental idea was to preserve the identity of the historic building and the natural surroundings, while simultaneously creating a contemporary space tailored to today’s guests.

Preservation of identity and material

The existing mill structure is interpreted through its preserved volumes and materials, while new additions are integrated subtly – with clean lines, transparent glass surfaces, and contemporary details. Wood and stone remain the defining elements of the spatial character, creating continuity with the original building and the river, which shapes the atmosphere of the entire complex.

Spatial organization and relationship to the river

The hotel’s spatial organization follows the natural flow of the water and the terrain. Interiors open toward the river, allowing a strong visual and experiential connection with the environment. Guests do not stay “next to” nature – they are immersed in it. Terraces, bridges, and outdoor spaces are carefully integrated to complement the setting without dominating it.

Intimate character and guest experience

The hotel maintains the intimate character of a small family stay, emphasizing warmth, personal experience, and the authenticity of the location. At the same time, the contemporary approach to architecture and interiors ensures a high level of comfort and functionality.

Reinterpretation of the place

The Old Mill is not merely a building reconstruction, but a reinterpretation of the place itself. The project combines heritage and modernity into a unique architectural story, transforming the former mill into a new center for stay, gathering, and river experience.
